Can pets eat dog food, for a cat?
By animal
| Animal | Verdict | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Dogs | In moderation | The reverse — cat food for a dog — is merely too rich, not dangerous. |
| Cats | Not safe | Not poisonous, but long term it causes taurine deficiency, which damages the heart and the retina. |
What it actually does
Cats are obligate carnivores and cannot synthesise enough taurine, arachidonic acid, vitamin A or niacin from plant precursors the way dogs can. Dog food is not formulated to supply them because a dog does not need them supplied. A cat eating dog food for months can develop dilated cardiomyopathy and irreversible retinal degeneration. A stolen mouthful is nothing; a diet is a serious problem, and it is the clearest example of why "pet food" is not one category.
No reliable dose threshold has been published for this. Anything presenting a specific safe amount is extrapolating.
Body weight decides almost everything here, so what is trivial for a 40 kg dog can matter for a 4 kg one, and a bird is smaller again. Where a real published threshold exists this page gives it; where none does, it says so rather than inventing one.
