607 islands spread across about 2,700 km of the western Pacific, in four states. Nan Madol off Pohnpei is a city of nearly a hundred artificial islets built from basalt columns on a reef between about AD 1200 and 1500, and is sometimes called the Venice of the Pacific. Chuuk Lagoon holds one of the largest concentrations of shipwrecks on the seabed anywhere.
