One of only two landlocked countries in South America, though ocean-going ships reach Asunción up the Paraguay River. The Itaipú dam, shared with Brazil, generates more electricity in a typical year than any other hydro plant except the Three Gorges. West of the river, the Gran Chaco is a vast dry scrub plain with some of the lowest population density on the continent.
