Does Motor oil expire?
An unopened bottle of motor oil stored indoors is essentially stable — the base oil does not degrade meaningfully and the additive package settles rather than decomposing, so shaking it is enough. Oil inside an engine is a different question entirely: it accumulates combustion by-products, fuel dilution and water from condensation, and the acids that result attack bearings whether or not the car is driven. That is why manufacturers give an interval in both miles and months, and the months matter most for a car that mostly makes short trips.
How to store it
- Sealed, indoors, upright. Temperature swings in a shed cause condensation inside the bottle.
How to tell it has gone
- Sealed oil: cloudiness or separation that will not shake out.
- Engine oil: milky appearance means water or coolant, which is a fault rather than age.
