Does Salt expire?
Does Salt expire?
No. Salt is a mineral, and the date on the packet is a labelling convention rather than a biological fact.
Indefinite; iodised salt keeps its iodine best for about 5 years
Sodium chloride is a rock. Nothing lives in it, nothing feeds on it, and it has no fats or proteins to break down, which is why salt has been used to preserve other food for several thousand years. Damp salt cakes and iodised salt does slowly lose its iodine, particularly if it is left open in a humid kitchen, and that is the one real reason iodised salt carries a date worth paying attention to. Anti-caking agents in table salt can settle out or clump, which affects how it pours and nothing else.
How to store it
- Keep it dry and closed — humidity is the only thing that changes it.
- A few grains of rice in a shaker still works for damp weather.
How to tell it has gone
- Clumping means moisture, not spoilage — break it up and use it.
"Use by" and "best before" are legally different. Use-by is a safety date and should be respected; best-before is about quality, and food is usually fine well past it. Where the two diverge matters, the page above says which applies.
