What a .xcf file is

XCF stores a GIMP project with its layers, channels, paths and selections intact. Only GIMP reads it fully; the browser editor Photopea imports it, and Krita offers partial support. Nothing else does, so export to PNG or TIFF before sending the image to anyone who does not use GIMP.

Converting it

A .xcf file is commonly converted to .png, .jpg, .tiff, .psd or .webp. It is a binary format, so a text editor will show unreadable characters rather than its contents.
