What a .yaml file is

YAML expresses the same structures as JSON with far less punctuation, which is why Kubernetes, Docker Compose, GitHub Actions and Ansible all use it. Indentation is significant and tabs are forbidden, so a single misplaced space breaks the file — the reason most YAML errors are formatting errors. The .yml spelling is identical, just shorter.

Converting it

A .yaml file is commonly converted to .json, .toml, .xml or .txt. It is a plain text format, so any text editor can open and edit it directly.
