In January 2022 a presidential decree changed the flag's blue from the traditional dark cobalt to turquoise, and both versions are now in circulation — the older shade is still flying on many buildings, and reference images disagree depending on when they were made. The five stars are the reason Honduras is identifiable at a glance among the Central American flags: no other member of the family uses them. Their X arrangement dates from 1866. The state coat of arms appears on official documents but not on the flag.
