What it means
Compulsory on pre-packaged organic food produced in the EU, unlike the USDA seal which is optional. It must be accompanied by the code number of the control body and a statement of where the agricultural raw materials were farmed — EU Agriculture, non-EU Agriculture, or both — which is more traceability than most marks provide. The threshold, 95% of agricultural ingredients by weight, matches the USDA seal, but the two schemes certify against different rulebooks and mutual recognition is a matter of trade agreement rather than equivalence by default.
Defined by Regulation (EU) 2018/848. Where a symbol differs between standards, the difference is described above rather than resolved — both versions are in circulation on real labels.
