Halal certification
A certifying body attests that the product complies with Islamic dietary rules.
What it looks like
Usually the Arabic word حلال or the word HALAL in a circle or crest, with the certifying body named.
What it means
There is no single global halal mark and no single authority; certification bodies operate nationally and their standards differ, notably on stunning before slaughter and on the treatment of alcohol used as a processing aid. Some countries — Malaysia, Indonesia, the UAE — run state-controlled schemes with a legally recognised logo, so the same product can be certified in one market and not in another. The named body on the label is therefore the substantive part, not the word itself.
Defined by National and private halal certification schemes. Where a symbol differs between standards, the difference is described above rather than resolved — both versions are in circulation on real labels.
