What it means
The scheme sets a fixed cut-off date for each company, audits the supply chain and requires re-commitment, which is what separates it from an unverified "not tested on animals" claim — that phrase can be technically true while an ingredient supplier tested on the company's behalf. The complication is regulatory: some markets have historically required animal testing for imported cosmetics, and a brand selling there could not hold the certification. Several different rabbit logos exist from different organisations and they are not interchangeable.
Defined by Cruelty Free International / Leaping Bunny Program. Where a symbol differs between standards, the difference is described above rather than resolved — both versions are in circulation on real labels.
