Food safe (glass and fork)
What it looks like
A wine glass beside a fork, drawn as simple outlines.
What it means
Required in the EU on food-contact materials whose purpose is not already obvious — you will find it on the base of storage tubs and on packaging film, but not on a dinner plate, because a plate needs no explanation. It means the material has been assessed against migration limits for its intended use, which are set out in the plastics regulation and are specific to the food type and temperature. It is not a US requirement, so its absence on an American product says nothing. The crossed-out version means the opposite and is worth reading carefully.
Defined by Regulation (EC) No 1935/2004. Where a symbol differs between standards, the difference is described above rather than resolved — both versions are in circulation on real labels.
