What it looks like
A triangle with 7 inside and OTHER or O below, sometimes with a further abbreviation such as PC, PLA or ABS.
What it means
This is the code that tells you least, because it covers materials with nothing in common. Polycarbonate, which is rigid, glass-clear and made from bisphenol A, is a 7. So is PLA, a compostable polyester made from fermented plant starch that softens in a hot car. So are nylon, acrylic, ABS and every multilayer laminate pouch. Nothing about handling, safety or disposal follows from the 7 alone: you have to read the letters printed with it. Kerbside schemes reject the code as a class, and a compostable PLA item put in a plastics bin is a contaminant rather than a bonus.
Defined by ASTM D7611. Where a symbol differs between standards, the difference is described above rather than resolved — both versions are in circulation on real labels.
