A sole bond flexes several thousand times a day and is loaded almost entirely in peel, which is the worst case for any adhesive — so the useful products are the flexible ones, and rigid strength on the tube is irrelevant. Preparation does more than product choice: sole units are moulded with release agents still on them and often carry a wax or silicone finish, so abrading and degreasing is what separates a repair that lasts a year from one that lasts a week. Contact adhesives also need pressure rather than time; the joint should be squeezed hard, ideally with a clamp or weight overnight, because the bond is formed at the moment the two coated faces are pressed together.

Technique that changes the outcome

  1. Clean out grit, then abrade both faces with 80-120 grit until the shine is gone
  2. Wipe with isopropanol or acetone and let it flash off completely
  3. Apply a thin coat to both faces, wait until touch-dry, then press hard and clamp
  4. Weight or clamp overnight and leave a further day before wearing them in the wet

What goes wrong

  • Superglue on a sole — brittle, and it contaminates the surface for a proper repair later
  • Expanding polyurethane glue, which foams the sole away from the upper
  • Wearing the shoes before the adhesive has fully cured

Rubber Contact cement for large flexible areas and rubber-toughened cyanoacrylate for small ones — but silicone and EPDM need a primer or they will not bond at all.
Outdoor and waterproof joints Polyurethane or epoxy for rigid joints, MS polymer where the joint has to move — and check the water-resistance class rather than the word "waterproof".
Acrylic (Perspex, Plexiglas) A solvent cement run into the joint by capillary action — not a tube adhesive, which will always look like a repair.
