Codes that look close but are not

Code Why it is not a substitute
AAA Two millimetres wider and two longer. AAAA is a distinct size, not a smaller AAA, and one is not a substitute for the other.
N / LR1 Shorter and fatter at 12 × 30.2 mm. Both are uncommon sizes, which is exactly why they get confused.

The LR8D425 is a primary cell and must never be put in a charger. Charging a sealed primary battery builds gas pressure inside a can with no vent designed for it, which is how they rupture or catch fire. Rechargeable look-alikes exist for several sizes and carry different codes — check the code, not the shape.

Where it turns up

  • Surface Pen and Microsoft active styluses
  • Some Wacom and HP stylus pens
  • Slim laser pointers
  • Small medical penlights

Six of these are what is inside a 9 V battery — which is why prising one open is a known way to get an AAAA in an emergency. Do it with a proper 6LR61 alkaline, not a lithium or a rechargeable, and expect to void every warranty involved.

Common questions

What is equivalent to a LR8D425?
LR8D425, LR61, 25A, MN2500, E96, MX2500, AM6, LR8, Type 25 — all the same 1.5 V cell under different manufacturer codes.
Can I use a AAA instead of a LR8D425?
Two millimetres wider and two longer. AAAA is a distinct size, not a smaller AAA, and one is not a substitute for the other.
Is the LR8D425 rechargeable?
