The Namib is generally reckoned the oldest desert on Earth, arid for at least 55 million years. The dunes at Sossusvlei rise over 300 m — among the tallest anywhere — and the Fish River Canyon is second in size only to the Grand Canyon. Namibia has the second-lowest population density of any country.
