Does Fire extinguishers expire?
Does Fire extinguishers expire?
Rechargeable ones need periodic servicing; disposable ones have a hard life of about twelve years.
Disposable: 12 years. Rechargeable: indefinite with inspection and periodic hydrostatic testing
Dry powder settles and compacts over years, and a compacted extinguisher discharges as a lump or not at all — which is why the standard advice is to invert and shake a stored powder extinguisher periodically. The pressure gauge tells you whether it is charged and nothing about whether the powder will flow. A disposable extinguisher cannot be serviced, so it carries a fixed life; a rechargeable one lasts as long as it passes inspection.
How to store it
- Mounted, visible, near an exit rather than near the hazard.
- Invert and shake powder units a couple of times a year.
How to tell it has gone
- Gauge outside the green band. Corrosion, a damaged hose, or a missing pin seal.
"Use by" and "best before" are legally different. Use-by is a safety date and should be respected; best-before is about quality, and food is usually fine well past it. Where the two diverge matters, the page above says which applies.
