Does Oats expire?
Does Oats expire?
Rolled oats keep 1-2 years. They do not spoil so much as go stale and eventually rancid.
1-2 years for rolled oats; steel-cut similar
Oats contain more fat than most grains — around 6% — and oat processing heat-treats them to deactivate the enzyme that would otherwise turn that fat rancid quickly. That treatment is why a packet lasts a year or more rather than a few weeks. Eventually the fat oxidises anyway and the oats take on a soapy, bitter taste. Instant oat sachets with added milk powder have a shorter life than plain oats, because the dairy fat goes first.
How to store it
- Airtight and cool.
- Freeze if you buy a sack and eat it slowly.
How to tell it has gone
- A soapy or bitter taste means the fat has oxidised.
- Any musty smell means moisture got in.
"Use by" and "best before" are legally different. Use-by is a safety date and should be respected; best-before is about quality, and food is usually fine well past it. Where the two diverge matters, the page above says which applies.
