How many Google searches are made every day?

How many Google searches are made every day?
roughly 8.5 billion — about 100,000 a second
About one query in seven has never been typed before by anyone, which is why search cannot work by simply looking up an answer it has already prepared.

The figure usually quoted is 8.5 billion Google searches a day, roughly 99,000 a second. It is worth knowing where that comes from: Google stopped publishing search volumes in 2016, so every current figure is a third-party estimate or a number that surfaced in litigation. Documents from the US antitrust proceedings put the scale in the same range and confirmed that a substantial share of queries have never been seen before. Google's own long-standing statement is that around 15% of daily searches are entirely new.

How the figure is arrived at

Panel measurement — a sample of users with monitored browsers — scaled by estimated total users, cross-checked against advertising impression volumes that Google does disclose. Court disclosures provide occasional ground truth. Nobody outside Google can measure it directly.
