What is a Soccer ball made of?

The whole modern design exists to solve a water problem. Leather balls absorbed rain, and a soaked leather ball could gain a third of its weight over a match, which is where the folklore about heading old footballs causing injury comes from. Synthetic covers and sealed seams fixed the mass, and then thermal bonding removed the stitch holes that were the last route in. FIFA-approved balls are still tested for water uptake, along with circumference, sphericity, rebound and pressure retention.
