Cat age calculator
A cat's age in human years, using the veterinary life-stage mapping.
How it works
Converts a cat’s age using the life-stage mapping veterinary bodies actually use, rather than multiplying by seven.
The first two years are what the linear rule gets most wrong. A cat reaches roughly the equivalent of a 15-year-old human by its first birthday and about 24 by its second, because it becomes sexually mature and physically full-grown in that window. After that the rate settles to roughly four human years per cat year.
Indoor and outdoor life expectancy differ enormously — commonly cited figures are around 12 to 18 years indoors against 2 to 5 outdoors in areas with traffic and predators. That gap dwarfs any refinement in the conversion arithmetic.
Cats hide illness well, which is why the veterinary guidance is twice-yearly check-ups from about eleven regardless of apparent health. The number this tool gives is a rough frame for that, not a diagnosis.

Common questions
- How old is a 1-year-old cat in human years?
- About 15. Cats reach sexual maturity and near-full size in their first year, which is why the linear rule fails worst there.
- Is one cat year seven human years?
- No. The first year is about 15, the second adds about 9, and each year after that adds roughly 4.
- When is a cat considered senior?
- Around 11 in most veterinary schemes, with twice-yearly check-ups recommended from then even if the cat seems well — cats conceal illness effectively.
