How it works
Enter the bill, choose a tip percentage, and split it between however many people are paying. The per-person total is what most people actually came for.
Whether to tip on the pre-tax or post-tax total is a genuine disagreement rather than a rule. Tipping on the pre-tax amount is the more common convention in the United States and is what this calculator does by default; tipping on the total is more generous by roughly the tax rate times the tip rate, which on a $100 bill at 8% tax and 20% tip is about $1.60.
Tipping customs vary enormously by country. In much of Europe and Asia a service charge is already included and additional tipping is optional or unusual; in the United States restaurant staff are frequently paid a sub-minimum wage on the assumption that tips make up the difference.

- How much should you tip?
- In United States restaurants, 15–20% of the pre-tax bill is standard, with 20% common for ordinary service. Elsewhere it varies widely and is often already included as a service charge.
- Do you tip on the total before or after tax?
- Convention in the US is to tip on the pre-tax subtotal. Tipping on the post-tax total is more generous by roughly the tax rate multiplied by the tip rate — a small amount on most bills.
