Discount calculator

Find the sale price and how much you save, including stacked discounts and tax.

How it works

Enter the original price and the discount to see what you pay and what you save. Stacked discounts are applied in sequence, which is how shops actually apply them.

Two discounts never simply add up. "50% off, then an extra 20% off" leaves 0.5 × 0.8 = 0.4 of the original price — 60% off, not 70%. The second discount is taken from the already-reduced price, which is why the order the shop applies them in does not change the total but the arithmetic still surprises people.

Tax is applied after the discount in most jurisdictions, so a discount reduces the tax you pay as well as the price.

Common questions

How do you calculate a discount?
Multiply the price by the discount as a decimal to find the saving, then subtract. 30% off $80 is 0.3 × 80 = $24 off, leaving $56. Or go straight there: 80 × 0.7 = $56.
Does 50% off plus 20% off equal 70% off?
No — it is 60% off. The 20% comes off the already-halved price, so you pay 0.5 × 0.8 = 0.4 of the original.
