How it works
Converts room dimensions into the number of packs required, given the coverage printed on the pack, plus a cutting allowance.
Plank flooring wants a slightly larger allowance than tile because of how it is laid. Each row starts with the offcut from the previous row where possible, but the first and last rows in a room almost always need ripping down the length, and that waste cannot be recovered. Eight to ten per cent covers a rectangular room; awkward shapes and diagonal layouts want more.
Leave an expansion gap of 10 to 12 mm around the whole perimeter. Laminate and engineered boards move with humidity, and flooring laid tight to the walls buckles in summer \u2014 the single most common failure with a floating floor, and one no amount of extra material fixes.

- Around 10% for a rectangular room, more for diagonal layouts or rooms with alcoves and doorways.
- Do I need an expansion gap?
- Yes, 10\u201312 mm around the perimeter for floating floors. Without it the floor buckles as humidity rises.
