Which screw should I use in MDF?
MDF is fibre and resin pressed to a uniform density, with no grain to resist splitting and nothing for a thread to key into except compacted fibre. A tapered screw acts as a wedge, and driven into a 18 mm edge it will burst the board along its length. So the rules are a parallel-shank screw, a pilot hole slightly larger than a comparable hole in timber, and a countersink cut rather than pulled by the screw head. Screws in the face hold reasonably; screws in the edge hold poorly and cannot be redone more than once or twice, which is why threaded inserts or knock-down fittings are used in furniture. The dust from drilling and machining MDF carries resin and fine wood dust and warrants extraction and a mask.
