The British ring final circuit is unusual internationally and its logic is that current divides between two paths, so 2.5 mm² cable can serve a 32 A circuit. The consequence is that a break anywhere in the ring is dangerous but invisible in normal use: the circuit still works, but the whole load now flows down one leg of cable rated for half of it. That is precisely what ring continuity testing exists to find, and it is one reason radial circuits are increasingly specified. In North America the arithmetic is simpler — conductor and breaker are matched, 14 AWG at 15 A and 12 AWG at 20 A — and the trap is a 20 A breaker on 14 AWG conductors, which is a real and common fault found on inspection.
