Occupies the western third of Hispaniola and is one of the most mountainous countries in the Caribbean — the name comes from a Taíno word meaning "land of high mountains". Pic la Selle reaches 2,680 m. The Citadelle Laferrière, built on a 900 m peak in the early 1800s, is the largest fortress in the Americas.
