The Al Hajar mountains reach 3,009 m at Jebel Shams above a canyon often called the Grand Canyon of Arabia. Oman contains the largest exposed section of oceanic crust and upper mantle on land anywhere, which is why geologists and Mars mission teams both use it as a field site.
