Does Cycle and motorcycle helmets expire?
Five years is the usual manufacturer figure, and any single significant impact ends it immediately.
5 years from first use; immediately after any impact
A helmet works by crushing: the expanded polystyrene liner permanently deforms to absorb energy, which means it protects once and then is finished, even if the outer shell looks perfect. That is the important part, and it is why a dropped-on-concrete helmet is suspect. The five-year figure covers gradual degradation of the liner and straps from ultraviolet light, sweat and heat, and is a manufacturer recommendation rather than a tested cliff.
How to store it
- Not on a parcel shelf or a windowsill. UV degrades the shell and the straps.
How to tell it has gone
- Any dent or crease in the liner. Cracks in the shell. Straps that have lost their stiffness.
- After a crash there is often no external sign at all — replace it anyway.
"Use by" and "best before" are legally different. Use-by is a safety date and should be respected; best-before is about quality, and food is usually fine well past it. Where the two diverge matters, the page above says which applies.
