Does Child car seats expire?
The plastic in a car seat is subjected to years of temperature cycling in a vehicle, which embrittles it in ways that are not visible, and a seat that cracks rather than deforming in a crash does not do its job. The expiry also covers standards moving on and the practical problem that a decade-old seat has no available replacement parts or recall support. Manufacturers stamp the date into the shell rather than printing it on a label for exactly this reason. A seat involved in anything more than a very minor collision should be replaced regardless of age.
How to store it
- A garage or loft is the worst place to store one between children — the temperature cycling is what does the damage.
How to tell it has gone
- The moulded date and expiry are on the shell, usually underneath or on the side. There is no visual test.
"Use by" and "best before" are legally different. Use-by is a safety date and should be respected; best-before is about quality, and food is usually fine well past it. Where the two diverge matters, the page above says which applies.
