Does Plasters and sterile dressings expire?
The adhesive fails and, more importantly, the sterile seal is only guaranteed to the date.
3-5 years
What expires on a plaster is not the fabric but the guarantee of sterility inside the wrapper, which depends on the seal holding. Adhesive also dries and yellows, so old plasters fall off, which is annoying rather than dangerous. For a scrape it hardly matters; for anything that needs a genuinely sterile dressing it does, which is the case that the date exists for.
How to store it
- Dry and cool. A car first-aid kit cycles through heat and cold and ages fastest.
How to tell it has gone
- Yellowed, brittle or non-sticky adhesive; a wrapper that has come unsealed.
"Use by" and "best before" are legally different. Use-by is a safety date and should be respected; best-before is about quality, and food is usually fine well past it. Where the two diverge matters, the page above says which applies.
