How many steps to the top of Statue of Liberty (crown)?

Steps to the top of Statue of Liberty (crown)
377
Reaching the crown, at 81 m — 162 steps above the top of the pedestal · restricted — events or permit only

This is the entry where the numbers most often go wrong. The Park Service gives 215 steps from the lobby to the pedestal and 162 more to the crown, which totals 377 — but 354 is the figure quoted almost everywhere, counting from a different starting point inside the pedestal. Both are in circulation and neither is a mistake exactly. The final 162 steps are a double-helix spiral 48 cm wide with no lift, no air conditioning and no way to turn back once you are in the queue, and crown tickets sell out months ahead. The torch has been closed to the public since the 1916 Black Tom explosion.

What the climb is like

About 20-30 minutes from the pedestal. Tight spiral, hot in summer, minimum age applies; tickets months in advance.

These steps are not open on an ordinary visit. Access is limited to organised events, races or permit holders.

Published counts for the same structure routinely disagree by five to ten per cent, and nearly always for one of three reasons: whether intermediate landings count as steps, whether the final platform step counts, and where the climb is deemed to start. The figure here says what it reaches.
