How many steps to the top of Strasbourg Cathedral?
The 332 steps end on a broad open platform rather than a cramped gallery, which makes this one of the more comfortable cathedral climbs in Europe. The spire above it, at 142 m, made Strasbourg the tallest building in the world from 1647 to 1874, and it is asymmetrical — only one of the two planned towers was ever built. Goethe climbed it repeatedly as a student to cure his fear of heights, which he wrote about. The astronomical clock inside is a separate, ticketed spectacle at half past midday.

What the climb is like
About 20 minutes. A wide stone spiral; the platform at the top is open and railed.
Published counts for the same structure routinely disagree by five to ten per cent, and nearly always for one of three reasons: whether intermediate landings count as steps, whether the final platform step counts, and where the climb is deemed to start. The figure here says what it reaches.
How it compares
Only the ones marked open to climb can actually be walked.
