What is a Syringe made of?

A needle is sharp exactly once. The bevel deforms microscopically on first insertion and the silicone coating wears off, which is why reuse hurts more and increases tissue damage as well as infection risk. The Luer connector, patented over a century ago, is so universal that it allowed a class of fatal errors — infusion lines connected to the wrong route — which is why the ISO 80369 series introduced deliberately incompatible connectors for enteral and neuraxial use. Disposal is the other design constraint: sharps bins exist because needlestick injuries are a serious occupational hazard, and many syringes now include a retracting or shielded needle.
