A cave sits close to the local mean annual air temperature, often around 8-12 °C, and it is usually wet. That combination drains body heat steadily, so hypothermia rather than air or water is the usual cause of death in caving accidents, especially for someone immobilised by injury. Air is rarely the constraint in a large system, though bad air pockets with high carbon dioxide or low oxygen do occur in some caves and are genuinely dangerous. Drip water is often drinkable, which removes the three-day limit. The strangest finding comes from deliberate isolation experiments: without daylight the body clock detaches from 24 hours and drifts, and subjects consistently underestimate how long they have been underground — Beatriz Flamini emerged from 500 days in a Spanish cave in 2023 believing far less time had passed.
