Venus combines everything at once: a surface temperature around 465 °C, uniform day and night, at a pressure of about 92 bar — the same as being 900 metres under the ocean. The atmosphere is 96 per cent carbon dioxide with clouds of sulphuric acid above. A human would be cooked, crushed and chemically attacked simultaneously, and the heat alone means unconsciousness in seconds. The engineering benchmark is the Soviet Venera programme: Venera 13 transmitted for 127 minutes in 1982 before its systems failed, which remains the record for anything on that surface. Curiously, about 50 kilometres up in the Venusian cloud layer, pressure and temperature are close to Earth-normal, which is why floating-habitat concepts exist — the acid clouds remain a problem.
