How long can you survive without air?

How long can you survive without air?
Consciousness goes in about a minute and brain injury begins around four to six minutes.
~1 minute to unconsciousness; brain injury from ~4 minutes; trained breath-hold divers exceed 10 minutes

The brain uses about a fifth of the body's oxygen and stores none of it, so it fails first. With circulation intact but no oxygen coming in, useful consciousness lasts on the order of a minute for an untrained person at rest, and far less during exertion. Irreversible neuronal damage generally begins around four to six minutes and becomes extensive beyond ten. The urge to breathe is driven by rising carbon dioxide rather than falling oxygen, which is why hyperventilating first is so dangerous: it delays the urge without adding meaningful oxygen, and people black out with no warning. Static apnoea records above eleven minutes are set by trained divers at rest, lying still in water, and are not a guide to what anyone else can do.

What happens, in order

When What
0-30 seconds Blood oxygen falls; carbon dioxide builds and drives the urge to breathe
~1 minute Consciousness typically lost in an untrained person
4-6 minutes Brain cells begin to die; this is why defibrillation and CPR timing matter
Beyond 10 minutes Survival without severe injury is rare outside cold-water cases

What changes the figure

  • Cold water slows metabolism and has allowed rare recoveries after much longer intervals
  • Rest versus exertion changes the figure several-fold
  • Lung volume and training extend breath-hold but not tissue tolerance

Hyperventilating before a breath-hold in water has caused deaths in otherwise strong swimmers; the blackout comes without warning.

Physiology, not instruction. Every figure here is a population range under particular conditions, and individual variation is large — temperature, exertion, fitness and health move all of them substantially. Nothing on this page is medical advice.
