How close to the Sun could you survive?

The visible surface of the Sun is about 5,500 °C and the corona above it is hotter still by a factor of hundreds, though it is so thin that its heat content is low. Any material object approaching would vaporise, and there is no engineering path around it at close range. What is possible is standing off behind a shield: NASA's Parker Solar Probe passed within roughly 6.1 million kilometres of the surface with a carbon-composite heat shield running around 1,400 °C while the instruments behind it stayed near room temperature. For an unshielded human, the limit is set long before heat — radiation and the solar wind become lethal well outside Mercury's orbit. Even at Earth's distance, unfiltered sunlight in vacuum will cause severe burns on the sunward side while the shaded side radiates heat away.
