How long can you survive without human contact?
Indefinitely in the direct sense — but isolation measurably raises the risk of dying early.
No acute limit; health effects accumulate over months and years

Nobody dies of loneliness the way they die of thirst. What the evidence shows instead is a slow, statistically solid effect: social isolation and loneliness are associated with a meaningfully higher risk of death from all causes, on a scale that health agencies now compare to well-known physical risk factors. The mechanisms proposed include chronic stress hormone elevation, worse sleep, higher blood pressure, reduced immune function and lower adherence to medical care. Acute total isolation — solitary confinement, extended solo expeditions — produces psychological effects much faster, with disturbed sleep, anxiety and perceptual distortion appearing within weeks. Long-duration solo sailors and cave researchers show that the effects are survivable and largely reversible, but they are not nothing.

Physiology, not instruction. Every figure here is a population range under particular conditions, and individual variation is large — temperature, exertion, fitness and health move all of them substantially. Nothing on this page is medical advice.
