Skin is strong enough to contain the roughly one atmosphere of internal pressure, so the body swells to perhaps twice its normal volume in places and does not rupture. The genuine hazards are three. Oxygen diffuses out of the lungs into the vacuum rather than in, so the blood returning to the brain is deoxygenated within seconds. Gas trapped in the lungs expands and can tear lung tissue, which is why the training instruction is to exhale, not hold a breath. And water in exposed tissue vaporises at body temperature below the Armstrong limit of about 6.3 kilopascals — the effect called ebullism, which causes swelling and the reported sensation of saliva boiling on the tongue. Freezing is not on the list: with no air to conduct heat away, the body cools only by radiation and evaporation, which takes hours.
