About seventy percent mountain, with the Albanian Alps in the north rising above 2,600 m. Lake Ohrid on the eastern border is one of the oldest lakes in the world at over a million years, and holds more than 200 species found nowhere else. The Vjosa was declared a national park in 2023, making it one of the last wild rivers in Europe protected along its whole length.
