What is a Cardboard made of?
Two flat kraft paper liners glued either side of a fluted paper medium — the flutes do all the work.
Corrugated board is stiff in one direction only, which is why a box is strong stacked upright and weak on its side: compression strength runs along the flutes. Flute size is a trade-off with its own alphabet — A and C flutes are tall and cushion well, B is short and prints well, E and F are thin enough to replace folding cartons. The corrugation idea arrived from an unlikely place: fluted paper was patented in 1856 as a liner for tall hats, and only in 1871 did anyone use it as packaging. Cardboard is one of the most recycled materials in the world, though each pass shortens the fibres, so recycled board always needs some fresh pulp blended in.
