What is a Glitter made of?

Every particle of conventional craft or cosmetic glitter is a piece of plastic under 5 mm across, which puts it squarely inside the standard definition of a microplastic. It is small enough and light enough to pass through wastewater treatment, and it turns up in sediment and in freshwater invertebrates. The EU restricted the sale of loose plastic glitter under its microplastics regulation in October 2023, with longer transition periods for cosmetics. Alternatives are made from regenerated cellulose from eucalyptus with a mineral or aluminium coating, though research has found that cellulose glitter is not automatically harmless in freshwater either, and the coatings are usually still synthetic.
