A large mature deciduous tree carries something like 200,000 leaves; a young or small one carries 10,000 to 50,000. The figure is genuinely calculable rather than guessed, because foresters routinely measure leaf area index — the square metres of leaf surface above each square metre of ground — and it lands between 3 and 6 for temperate broadleaf woodland. Conifers are a different question entirely: a mature pine carries millions of needles, which is why "leaves" needs defining before the number means anything.

How the figure is arrived at

Multiply the crown's ground area by the leaf area index to get total leaf area, then divide by the area of one leaf. For an oak with a 15 m crown: π × 7.5² = 177 m² of ground, × LAI 5 = 885 m² of leaf, ÷ 50 cm² per leaf = about 177,000 leaves. Foresters check this by stripping and weighing a sample branch and scaling by branch cross-section.
