How many galaxies are there?
This is the entry where the experts most visibly disagree. Counting galaxies directly in Hubble deep-field images and scaling to the whole sky gives around 200 billion. A 2016 analysis argued that faint dwarf galaxies push the true total to about 2 trillion, ten times higher. Then in 2021 the New Horizons probe, far enough from the Sun to escape the solar system's dust glow, measured the total background light of the sky and found it consistent with only a few hundred billion. As of now the lower figure is the better-supported one, and the 2 trillion number is still the one most often quoted.
How the figure is arrived at
Deep-field extrapolation: expose on an empty patch of sky for days, count galaxies, divide by the patch area, multiply by the area of the whole sky. The correction for galaxies too faint to appear is where the disagreement lives. The New Horizons approach sidesteps counting entirely by measuring how much light the sky contains in total and asking how many galaxies it would take to produce it.
