How many websites are there?
The number people quote — over a billion websites — counts hostnames that respond to a request, and the great majority of those are parked domains, redirects and placeholder pages with no content on them. The count of genuinely active sites is around 200 million, and it has been roughly flat since 2017 while the hostname count kept climbing. The gap between the two figures is the entire domain-parking industry. Around 5 to 10 million new domains are registered every month, and a comparable number expire.
How the figure is arrived at
Send an HTTP request to every hostname that can be found through DNS zone files, certificate transparency logs and crawling, and record what responds. A site counts as "active" if it returns real content rather than a holding page, which is a judgement encoded in a classifier — different surveys draw the line differently and get answers varying by tens of millions.

Both figures move monthly and the hostname count is dominated by parked domains, so quoting it as "how many websites exist" overstates the real answer roughly fivefold.
