What is a Carpet made of?
Face fibre tufted through a woven backing and locked in place with latex — three layers, two of which you never see.

The distinctive smell of new carpet is 4-phenylcyclohexene, a by-product of the styrene-butadiene latex used in the backing, and it dissipates over days with ventilation. Carpet is a difficult product to recycle precisely because the three layers are bonded together with a fourth material, so separating nylon face fibre from polypropylene backing needs dedicated processing that only exists in a few places. The label distinction worth knowing is cut pile versus loop: loop pile resists footprint marks and wears well in halls, but a pulled loop runs, which is why it is a poor choice in a house with a cat.

Component by component

Every material is a choice, and the third column is the constraint that drove it.
Part Material Why that material
face fibre nylon, polypropylene, polyester or wool Nylon recovers from crushing best and takes dye well; polypropylene is stain-proof but flattens; wool is resilient and naturally flame-retardant.
primary backing woven polypropylene fabric The tufting needles punch through it thousands of times a minute, so it must not run or tear at the puncture.
lock coat styrene-butadiene latex adhesive Tufts are not knotted, only pushed through — without the latex the whole carpet unravels from a single pulled loop.
secondary backing woven polypropylene or jute It gives the carpet dimensional stability so it does not stretch and ripple underfoot.
treatments stain-resist chemistry and antimicrobial finishes Nylon has dye sites that also grab food colouring; stain-resist agents pre-fill them, which is why untreated nylon stains badly.
