What is a Nail polish made of?

Nail polish is direct industrial heritage: nitrocellulose lacquers were developed for spraying car bodies in the 1920s, and the first modern polish followed straight from them. "Three-free" and "ten-free" claims refer to the removal of specific ingredients — dibutyl phthalate, toluene and formaldehyde resin first, then camphor, formaldehyde, TPHP and others — and the numbering is a marketing convention rather than a regulated definition. Gel polish is a different material entirely: acrylate oligomers cured by UV or LED light into a crosslinked film, which is why it cannot be removed with acetone alone without soaking, and why the uncured liquid is a significant skin sensitiser.
