Nylon absorbs water and softens, which is a large part of why bristles splay and lose effectiveness — the three-month replacement advice is about mechanical wear, not hygiene. Every dental body that has looked at it recommends soft bristles: medium and hard brushes remove no more plaque and cause measurably more gum recession and abrasion at the neck of the tooth, and pressure matters more than stiffness. Before nylon arrived in 1938, brushes used boar bristle, which held bacteria, never dried and fell out. Bamboo-handled brushes still use nylon bristles, so only the handle composts.
