Codes that look close but are not

Code Why it is not a substitute
Size 312 / PR41 The next size up: 7.9 mm across rather than 5.8. Brown tab, not yellow. It will not enter a size 10 door.

The PR70 is a primary cell and must never be put in a charger. Charging a sealed primary battery builds gas pressure inside a can with no vent designed for it, which is how they rupture or catch fire. Rechargeable look-alikes exist for several sizes and carry different codes — check the code, not the shape.

Where it turns up

  • In-the-canal and invisible-in-canal hearing aids
  • Completely-in-canal instruments
  • The smallest receiver-in-canal aids
  • Some miniature medical monitors

Yellow tab. Once the tab is off the cell is live for good — expect three to seven days of use, and give it a full minute of air before closing the battery door or the first reading of voltage will be low.

Common questions

What is equivalent to a PR70?
ZA10, A10, AC10, DA10, P10, 10A, S10, V10, 7005ZD, PR536, PR70 — all the same 1.4 V cell under different manufacturer codes.
Can I use a Size 312 / PR41 instead of a PR70?
The next size up: 7.9 mm across rather than 5.8. Brown tab, not yellow. It will not enter a size 10 door.
Is the PR70 rechargeable?
No. It is a primary cell — charging one risks rupture or fire. Rechargeable look-alikes exist in the same size under different codes.
